If you know me, you know that my husband and I try to include Tucker in every activity we can. In the Spring 2016 when we were still living in the DC area, we took Tucker to Rehoboth Beach. We stayed one night in a pet friendly hotel and Tucker enjoyed himself but the weather was COLD. Even though we moved away, I wanted to try to go back this spring. I found a cute little pet friendly condo 40 yards from the beach in Dewey, about a mile from Rehoboth on the last weekend of April. In Dewey, pets cane be on the beach with a license at any time of day. I booked the condo and we decided to go for a long weekend. This was nice because it had a kitchen so we could bring some food and not eat out every meal. I anxiously monitored the weather- knowing that our condo agreement allowed us to cancel within 48 hours with a full refund was nice and let me tell you, the weather looked FABULOUS. I was so excited to get away- it had been a long few months and I needed to get away as well.
It takes about 3 and a half hours from Harrisburg PA to drive to Dewey Beach without traffic. It took us about 4 to weave through Lancaster and I will say, the drive seemed interminable. Once we got there, we stopped at their town hall to pick up a license and then went to our home for the weekend. It was a warm day and I was wondering if Tucker would remember the beach, which he loved last year.
Well, I didn’t have to wonder for long. We got in our suits since it was so warm and went down to the beach. Tucker bounded on the beach and went right to the water- something I didn’t think he’d do immediately. The water was FRIGID, it was still only late April but it actually felt good. What struck me immediately was how much Tucker loved it. He loved the waves (and the water probably felt pretty good). We stayed out on the beach for awhile- one thing we had noticed about Dewey is that unlike Rehoboth, there wasn’t much grass around so Tucker had to potty a lot on the beach. We walked down the beach to Rehoboth and the boardwalk and it was heavenly. We then made our way back to the condo for a little relaxation before we went to dinner at a place called the Lighthouse, a dog friendly restaurant right on the water.
Now, here’s where I tell you that Dewey is so dog friendly that many dog groups host dog weekends in Dewey. It just so happens this was one of the weekends and it was Doodles in Dewey. So we were surrounded by doodles. Tucker loved it and was so well-behaved.
The rest of the weekend passed by in a blur of the beach and lots of water time and we even let him off leash on the beach for a bit. It was so relaxing for me and I think we are going to try to go back in the fall.
